I Normanni comparvero nella Valle del Crati intorno al 1053, quando Roberto il Guiscardo fu inviato in queste terre dal fratello Drogone per reprimere i focolai di resistenza.
Montalto venne maggiormente fortificata per ordine di Federico II, lo stupor mundi (“meraviglia o stupore del mondo”). Già dal X sec., infatti, si era costituito un importante raggruppamento rurale, posto al centro di un’altura circondata da altri colli, che permettevano un maggiore controllo del territorio.
La Torre Normanna è una delle sei torri annesse alle mura che circondavano l’abitato.
Norman Tower
The Normans appeared in the Valle del Crati around 1053, when Roberto il Guiscardo was sent to these lands by his brother Drogone to repress the outbreaks of resistance.
Montalto was further fortified by order of Federico II, the stupor mundi ("wonder of the world"). In fact, since the 10th century, an important rural group was formed, located at the center of a hill surrounded by other hills, which allowed greater control of the territory.
The Norman Tower is one of the six towers attached to the walls that surrounded the town.
